The Peak District study desk

An L-shape with a three-drawer filing pedestal, drawn for a private study in a 19th-century stone farmhouse just outside Hathersage. The room is small, sage-walled, and lit by a single north-facing window — three constraints that ended up dictating everything.

The desk is 1.8m × 1.4m, sized to leave a 600mm clearance to the door swing on the long axis and exactly 300mm to the radiator on the short. The top is solid medium oak, 50mm thick, with a 30mm overhang on three sides. The filing pedestal is castored so it can roll away from the desk to clean behind.

Client: Private, by referral

Year: March 2026

Top: Solid medium oak, 50mm

Frame: Charcoal steel, lacquered

Dimensions: 1.8m × 1.4m × 760mm

Lead time: 6 weeks · door-to-door

The desk fits the room in a way I would not have imagined possible. The brief was a sentence on the back of an envelope. The result is six weeks of joinery and almost no compromise. The client · Hathersage, March 2026
