A six-desk Remington industrial workstation fit-out in a Derby studio — solid oak tops on hand-welded steel chassis

What is an industrial workstation?

An industrial workstation is a multi-seat shared desk built in the warehouse-furniture tradition: visible welds, square steel sections, solid timber tops without veneer, and joinery you can actually see. Two, three, four or six people sit on a single continuous chassis, with shared cable management beneath and optional steel-mesh privacy panels above. Heavy, rectilinear, functional — built to take twenty years of daily use, not a single fashion cycle.

Our workstations pair solid American white oak tops, 30 to 50 mm thick, with a hand-welded mild-steel chassis finished in our standard charcoal lacquer or any RAL colour. Each is built one at a time in Derby, with a Russell Oak & Steel brass identification plate riveted to the apron — every piece is signed and numbered, and the workshop is happy to put your studio's name and a build date on it as well.

This page is an index of every workstation layout we make. If you're outfitting a two-person home office, a four-seat studio, a six-seat agency team room, or a custom layout drawn around your existing floorplan, you'll find it in the sections below — each linking through to the full configurator with sizing, oak finish, steel finish, storage, dividers and cable management options.

How our workstations are built.

The chassis is shared. Where two single desks would have eight legs, a workstation has four — a single welded spine running beneath the full length of the desk, supporting two facing oak tops, with integrated cable trays and optional pedestal storage that bolts on or detaches without tools. This means fewer points of contact with the floor, no rocking on uneven boards, and a structural rigidity that single desks simply can't match.

Ask our team about the materials, finish and care requirements for your chosen piece. Please contact us for advice about maintenance or a repair.

Choosing the right workstation layout.

2-seater workstations — the working pair

Our most popular configuration. Two seats facing each other on a single welded steel spine, with shared cable management beneath the apron and optional steel-mesh privacy panel between users. Drawn for two-person studios, partner desks in private offices, and shared home-office setups where two people need to work without negotiating extension leads. Layouts No. 01–03 below.

3 and 4-seater workstations — the small team

For a growing studio or a four-person agency team, we build straight runs of three and four desks, plus L-shape and cross-pattern variants where the room dictates. The steel chassis is welded as a single run regardless of seat count, which means a four-seat workstation behaves structurally like one heavy piece of furniture rather than four separate desks bolted together. Layouts No. 04–10 below cover three and four seats.

5 and 6-seater workstations — the team room

At five and six seats, the workstation becomes a floor-defining piece. We've installed these in agency open-plan offices, design studios, professional services firms and even one converted barn used by a six-person engineering practice. The chassis is shipped in two welded sections and joined on site by our delivery team — no on-site welding, no visible joint above the apron. Layouts No. 11–14 below.

Sizes and customisation

Every workstation is built to order. Standard desk width per seat runs from 1200 mm up to 2200 mm in 100 mm increments; standard depth is 700 mm per side. Privacy panels, drawer pedestals, cable holes and oak finish are all configurable per seat — there's no requirement for symmetry. For dimensions outside the standard range, or for floor-plan-specific arrangements that don't appear on the layout grid, please get in touch.

Why made-to-order matters.

We don't keep finished workstations in stock. Each one is drawn, cut, welded and finished only after it's ordered, which means the workshop never produces something nobody wants. It also means every workstation you buy from us was built specifically for your floor plan — your exact desk width per seat, your exact aisle gaps, your choice of oak colour, your choice of steel finish, and your choice of which seats need pedestals and which don't.

The four to six week lead time is the consequence of this. It's slower than retail office furniture, faster than most bespoke joiners, and matches the time it takes to do everything in solid timber and welded steel rather than MDF and flat-pack hardware. The workstation that arrives is the one you specified, finished by hand, signed and numbered.

Delivery, assembly and aftercare.

Industrial workstations ship across the United Kingdom on our own vehicles, by a two-to-four-person team from the workshop. Six-seater units travel in two welded sections and join on site without visible fixings above the apron. We deliver fully assembled and installed — no flat-pack, no instructions, no Allen keys. The team carries the workstation into your office, levels each leg, runs the cable tray and signs it off with you.

Care is straightforward: a soft cloth and water for the oak, occasional reapplication of hardwax oil every two or three years to keep the surface protected. The steel needs nothing. If anything ever fails — a drawer slide, a cable grommet, a chipped edge — we'll repair it in-workshop for the life of the workstation. There's no warranty timer, no fine print.

Industrial-desk questions, answered.

Are your industrial desks made in the UK?

Furniture is made to order. Discuss access, delivery and assembly arrangements with our team before ordering.

Can I order a custom-size industrial desk?

Every desk is made to order. Width, depth, drawer arrangement, oak colour and steel finish are all specified at the point of order. For sizes outside the standard 1200–2200 mm range — including very large dining tables and bespoke corner configurations — please get in touch with our team.

What's the lead time?

Four to six weeks from signed quote for desks in our standard charcoal raw steel finish, including delivery and installation. Powder-coated finishes (any RAL colour) add two to three weeks because the steel goes off-site for coating after fabrication.

How thick are the oak tops?

30 mm is standard. We can build 50 mm slab tops as an upgrade — significantly heavier, recommended for dining tables and large workstations. Both options are solid timber throughout — no veneer, no MDF core.

Do the desks come with cable management?

Every model has the option of one or more cable holes with rubber grommets, plus an under-desk cable tray to keep wiring off the floor. Corner desks have the option of a corner cable hole positioned at the L-bend. Workstations include a full cable raceway running the length of the shared apron.

What's the difference between the Remington and X Frame ranges?

Both are built the same way — solid oak, welded steel — but the chassis geometry differs. The Remington uses a simple square-section base, the most pared-back shape we make. The X Frame uses a diagonally-braced base, drawn originally for an architect's studio: more architectural in appearance, more rigid along the long axis, slightly heavier.

Can the steel be powder-coated in a colour to match my room?

Yes — any RAL Classic colour. There's a £360 surcharge per desk and an additional two to three week lead time, as the fabricated steel goes off-site for coating before final finishing. The desks ship with the same brass identification plate and finished oak top regardless of steel colour.

What's the guarantee?

Please contact our team for product-specific information about materials, care and aftercare. Your statutory rights are unaffected.
